A pool repaint can look excellent for a few weeks, then start blistering, peeling or fading because one critical step was missed. Knowing how to avoid repaint failure comes down to three things: identifying the existing surface, preparing it properly and using a compatible pool coating. For concrete and fibreglass pools across Australia, the biggest mistakes are usually made before the first tin is opened. The right paint system is only as good as the surface underneath it.

Start by finding out why the old paint failed

Do not paint over a failed coating and hope the new layer will hold it together. Peeling paint is a symptom, not the underlying problem. If the cause remains, the new coating is likely to peel in the same areas.

Common causes include moisture pushing through concrete, poor adhesion to a glossy or chalky surface, contamination from oils or chemicals, and applying a new coating over an incompatible old one. In Sydney, heat and strong UV exposure can add pressure to a tired coating, but sunlight alone is rarely the reason paint lifts off in sheets.

Look closely at the failed areas. Fine powder on your hand can indicate chalking. Bubbles or raised blisters may point to moisture or trapped air. Paint lifting back to bare concrete often means poor preparation, while a new layer separating from the old paint usually suggests an adhesion or compatibility issue.

If paint is flaking across large areas, remove all loose and unsound material. A sound-looking coating that fails a simple adhesion check may also need to come off. Painting over weak layers is a false economy.

How to avoid repaint failure: choose a compatible system

The existing pool surface determines the preparation and coating system you need. Concrete, fibreglass and previously painted pools should not be treated as though they are the same job.

Concrete pools

Bare concrete needs to be clean, dry, solid and correctly profiled before epoxy coating is applied. New concrete also needs adequate curing time. Concrete that looks dry on the surface can still contain moisture below, and that moisture can push against a coating after the pool is filled.

Old concrete pools may have calcium deposits, algae staining, loose render, patch repairs or waterline contamination. These issues need to be dealt with before painting. Acid washing may be appropriate in some situations, but it is not a substitute for proper cleaning, repair and mechanical preparation where required.

A quality epoxy pool coating is generally the right choice when you want a durable finish for a prepared concrete pool. It provides strong adhesion and chemical resistance, but only when applied to a stable substrate.

Fibreglass pools

Fibreglass is less forgiving of poor surface preparation because its gelcoat is smooth and non-porous. A coating needs a properly dulled, cleaned surface to grip. If the pool has previously been painted, you also need to establish whether the old paint is sound and compatible with the new system.

Do not apply epoxy directly over a glossy, waxy or contaminated fibreglass surface. Thorough cleaning and abrasion are essential. Any osmotic blistering, cracks or damaged areas should be repaired before coating.

Previously painted pools

If you do not know what paint is currently on the pool, do not guess. Different coating types can react badly or fail to bond when painted over each other. Test patches can help, but they do not replace checking the condition of the existing coating.

Where the existing coating is firmly bonded and compatible, preparation may involve cleaning, sanding and repairing defects. Where it is peeling, soft, chalky or unknown, stripping back further is usually the safer option. Preparation is where most repaint jobs are won or lost

Pool paint does not hide poor preparation. It highlights it later through peeling, bubbling and uneven finish.

Start by draining the pool completely and removing leaves, dirt and loose debris. Then degrease the surface thoroughly, particularly around the waterline, steps, ledges and areas where sunscreen, body oils and chemical residue build up. Rinse properly. Residue from cleaners can interfere with adhesion just as much as the contamination you were trying to remove.

Next, remove loose or failing paint. Scraping alone may not be enough. Sanding, grinding or other mechanical methods may be needed to create a clean, keyed surface. The aim is not simply to make the pool look rough. It is to remove unsound material and give the epoxy a consistent surface to bond to.

Repairs matter too. Fill cracks, holes and damaged render with a suitable repair material, then allow it to cure as directed. Do not coat over damp repairs or patches that have not been sanded flush.

Before painting, vacuum all dust and inspect the surface in good light. It should be clean, dry, firm and free from anything that could stop the coating bonding. If you can rub a hand across the surface and pick up powder, it is not ready.

Control moisture before applying epoxy pool paint

Moisture is one of the hardest causes of repaint failure to fix after the job is done. In concrete pools, water vapour can move through the slab or walls and create pressure under the coating. This can lead to blisters, especially when the pool is exposed to heat.

Do not assume a few dry days are enough after rain, washing or acid treatment. Drying time depends on the pool construction, drainage, weather, shade and humidity. A pool in a damp, shaded backyard may need more time than one in full sun.

Check for signs of moisture before you begin, especially on older concrete pools. Dark patches, persistent dampness, white mineral deposits and recurring blistering all deserve attention. If there is a groundwater issue or water entering through cracks, solve that problem before repainting. Paint is not a waterproofing fix for structural movement or hydrostatic pressure.

Apply within the product’s stated conditions

Even the correct epoxy system can fail if it is mixed or applied incorrectly. Two-pack epoxy coatings rely on accurate mixing ratios and a limited working time after mixing. Avoid painting in unsuitable weather. Very hot surfaces can cause the coating to flash off too quickly, while cold, damp conditions can slow curing and affect adhesion. Early morning dew, late-afternoon condensation and incoming rain can all ruin a coat that looked fine when it was applied.

Plan the job around stable weather and work in sections so you can maintain a wet edge. Apply the recommended number of coats at the specified spread rate. Trying to stretch paint too far leaves a thin film that wears sooner. Applying it too heavily can create curing and solvent-trap issues.

Use the correct roller and follow the stated recoat window. Waiting too long between coats can reduce intercoat adhesion, while recoating too early can disturb the first coat. Product instructions are not optional fine print. They are part of the coating system.

Calculate enough paint before you start

Running short halfway through a pool repaint creates avoidable problems. You may be forced to buy a later batch, rush the last areas or apply the coating too thinly to make it reach.

Measure the pool’s length, width and average depth, then include walls, steps, benches, swim-outs and any raised areas. The true paintable area is more than the floor. Do not rush the cure before filling the pool

A freshly painted pool can feel dry long before it is fully cured. Filling too early exposes the coating to water and chemicals before it has reached its designed strength. That can affect gloss, adhesion and long-term durability.

Allow the complete cure period specified for the epoxy system, taking weather conditions into account. Once filled, balance the water carefully. Aggressive water chemistry can shorten the life of any pool coating, particularly in the first weeks after a repaint.
